A Medically Guided Approach to Understanding Emerging Regenerative Therapies

Regenerative medicine is an evolving area of healthcare that focuses on biological approaches related to the body’s natural processes of repair, recovery, and tissue function.

At True Wellness Integrated Medicine, we believe these therapies deserve the same thoughtful approach as any other medical treatment: a clear diagnosis, appropriate patient evaluation, physician oversight, realistic expectations, and an honest discussion about what is known & what is still being studied.

Our goal is not to recommend regenerative medicine to everyone. It is to help patients understand their options and determine whether an emerging therapy deserves consideration as part of their broader care plan.

What Is Regenerative Medicine?

Regenerative medicine is a broad term rather than a single treatment.

Depending on the therapy being discussed, regenerative medicine may involve biological products or procedures intended to interact with processes involved in tissue repair, inflammation, recovery, or cellular signaling.

You may hear terms such as:

  • Cellular therapies
  • Stem cell therapies
  • Wharton’s jelly
  • Exosome-based products
  • Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP
  • Biologic therapies

These terms are sometimes used interchangeably in advertising, but they are not interchangeable medically or scientifically.

Different therapies can vary substantially in their composition, source, processing, regulatory status, supporting evidence, and intended use.

That is why we believe the most important first question is not, “Do you offer regenerative medicine?”

It is: “What specifically is being considered, and is it appropriate for me?”

A Medical Evaluation Comes First

Persistent joint, back, neck, or musculoskeletal symptoms can have many different causes.

Knee pain, for example, may be related to osteoarthritis, previous injury, cartilage changes, tendon problems, ligament damage, biomechanics, referred pain, or a combination of factors.

Two people with pain in exactly the same location may need completely different care.

Before discussing any procedure, our medical team considers the larger clinical picture, which may include:

  • Your symptoms and how they affect daily life
  • Medical and injury history
  • Previous treatments
  • Current medications
  • Physical examination findings
  • Existing imaging or additional imaging when appropriate
  • Overall health
  • Your goals for treatment

From there, we can have a more meaningful conversation about the options available to you.

Regenerative Medicine Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Regenerative Medicine Right for Everyone?

Severe, painful headache that is often paired with blind spots, tingling in the arms and legs, nausea, vomiting, and increased sensitivity to light and sound. These excruciating headaches can last a few hours or even a few days. Migraines result from a combination of blood vessel enlargement and the release of nerve fiber chemicals around the vessels and are more frequently found in women.

  • What Makes Regenerative Therapies Different?

One of the challenges surrounding regenerative medicine is that the terminology can make very different products sound similar.

Product sourcing, manufacturing, testing, processing, composition, and regulatory classification can all matter.

When a biological product is being considered, patients should be able to ask questions such as:

    What exactly is being used?

You should know what type of product or procedure your provider is discussing.

    Where does it come from?

The source and manufacturer should not be a mystery.

    What documentation is available?

Depending on the therapy, documentation can include information related to sterility, composition, manufacturing, and product-specific testing.

    What is its regulatory status?

A product being available or permitted for use under state law is not the same as FDA approval for a particular medical condition.

    What evidence supports its use?

The amount and quality of research varies considerably across regenerative therapies and clinical applications.

We believe patients deserve straightforward answers to these questions.

  • Is regenerative medicine the same as stem cell therapy?

No. Individual medical history, current medications, health conditions, goals, and other factors can all affect whether a particular treatment is appropriate.

  • Is regenerative medicine FDA-approved?

Cluster Headaches are the least common type of headache and occur over a period of time called the “cluster period,” which can last weeks or even months. Often they reoccur at the same time, each with migraine-like symptoms. Most people diagnosed with cluster headaches are under the age of thirty.

  • Do I need an evaluation first?

Yes. A member of our team can provide general information and explain the process. Specific treatment recommendations are made only after an appropriate clinical evaluation.

  • How do I know what type of regenerative product is being used?

Ask your provider directly. Patients should understand the name and type of product, its source, available documentation, regulatory status, and why it is being considered.

  • What changed in Tennessee?

Tennessee enacted legislation in 2026 establishing a framework for qualifying physicians performing certain stem cell and regenerative medicine therapies. We explain the legislation in greater detail in our guide to Tennessee HB 2246.

Our Approach at True Wellness Integrated Medicine

We believe patients exploring newer treatment options deserve clarity rather than hype.

That means evaluating the underlying problem first, discussing appropriate alternatives, being transparent about regulatory status, setting realistic expectations, and making recommendations based on the individual patient. Medicine continues to evolve. Our responsibility is to help patients navigate those changes thoughtfully and make informed decisions about their care.

Questions to Ask Before Considering Regenerative Medicine

If you are exploring regenerative medicine in Chattanooga or elsewhere, consider asking your provider:

  • What is my diagnosis?
  • Why are you recommending this particular therapy?
  • What exactly will be administered or performed?
  • Is the therapy FDA-approved for this use?
  • What evidence supports its use for my condition?
  • Where does the product come from?
  • What testing or product documentation is available?
  • What are the known and potential risks?
  • What other treatments should I consider?
  • What results are realistic?
  • How will we evaluate whether treatment has helped?
  • What follow-up care is included?

A good medical decision should hold up to good questions.
